Techniques for reaching consensus in a diverse group

The first step to solving a business problem is: Understand the problem!
In a diverse group, this may be harder than it seems. Working in cross-functional teams with members from IT, manufacturing, sales... and other areas, sometimes we don't agree even on some basic terms.
How to overcome it?
The answer is: "Alignment Workshops." We interview every team member to get their point of view; we schedule a full-day (or multi-day) workshop session - and there, we lead the group through a series of exercises.
The final result is: Clear goal, defined problem and a set of next steps.
